Why I Don't Charge a Build Fee (And Why That's a Good Thing for You)

I get some version of the same question almost every time I talk to a new client.

They've looked at the pricing page. They understand the monthly fee. Then they pause and ask, "Okay, but how much does it cost to get started?"

My answer is always the same: the first monthly payment.

Then comes the follow-up: "Wait…you don't charge for the build?"

Nope. Here's why.

The Upfront Cost Problem

One of the biggest barriers keeping small business owners from getting a professional website isn't skepticism about whether they need one. Most people know they need one. The barrier is the sticker shock that comes with getting a quote from a typical agency.

I've had clients tell me they paid anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000 just to get their site built. And that's before any ongoing maintenance, updates, or support. That kind of price tag isn't just intimidating, it's a legitimate financial risk for a small business. You're paying a huge sum upfront with no guarantee the site will actually perform or that the agency will still be around when you need changes made.

That model has never sat right with me. So I built Lamplighter around a different one.

We Lower the On-Ramp on Purpose

My goal from the start has been to make professional web design accessible to small businesses. Not just the ones with deep pockets. All of them.

Lowering the upfront cost is how I do that. But I want to be clear about something: Lamplighter doesn't just fold the build cost into your monthly fee and call it a wash. We waive it entirely. That's a real difference.

When I do that, I'm making a bet on you. I'm choosing to invest my time and skills upfront because I believe in building a long-term relationship, one that pays off for both of us over time. The longer I work with your business, the better I understand it. And the longer you work with me, the more you see that knowledge show up in results.

That's not a transaction. That's a partnership.

The 12-Month Contract (And What Comes After)

We start every client relationship with a 12-month contract. That's intentional. Big changes to a website (new design, better SEO, improved structure) take time to gain traction on the internet. A few months in, you might not see the full picture yet. Twelve months gives us enough runway to actually see results.

But here's what I want you to know about what happens after that contract ends. We move to month-to-month. No long-term lock-in. No pressure. If you ever feel like the service isn't working for you, you're free to walk away.

That said, most clients don't. They reach the end of year one with a better website, better visibility, and better results than anything they had before. And more often than not, they've already passed my name along to someone they know.

That's what I'm aiming for every time. I want to be your partner for the long haul. Someone in your corner as your business hits milestones and takes on new goals.

Simple Payments Mean Less Stress

There's another reason the monthly model matters: it makes your website easy to budget for.

You know exactly what you're paying each month. You can measure the return. You can set realistic expectations over time. There are no surprise invoices, no "we need to charge you for that update," no scrambling to find thousands of dollars because something needs to be rebuilt.

Starting at $187 a month, a professional hand-coded website with unlimited edits, hosting, local SEO, and direct access to me personally is well within reach for most small businesses. And the predictability of that number makes running your business a little less stressful.

The Bottom Line

Here's the thing: running a small business is already hard. Your website shouldn't add to that stress. It should be working quietly in the background, doing its job, while you do yours.

That's what Lamplighter is built to do.

If you've been sitting on the fence because you were expecting a huge bill just to get a website launched, I want you to know that's not how we operate here.
